As the Editor in Chief of Artforum, Tina Rivers Ryan oversees the editorial direction of the acclaimed international art magazine across its platforms, including its print edition, website, video series, social media channels, newsletters, and live events.
In this talk, Ryan will reflect on the future, present, and past of video and digital art, framing some of the key topics through her work as an editor, critic, art historian, and former curator at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
Bio:
An Artforum contributor since 2013, Ryan has written for many art magazines—including Art in America, the Brooklyn Rail, Art Review, Spike, and Burlington Contemporary—as well as for books from some of the world’s most renowned museums, including The Met, Dia, the Walker Art Center, The Modern Ft. Worth, and Tate Modern. Previously, she worked in curatorial roles at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly Albright-Knox Art Gallery), where her projects included such groundbreaking shows as Electric Op (2024), Peer to Peer (2022), and Difference Machines: Technology and Identity in Contemporary Art (2021). Her awards include the 2022 Award for Excellence from the Association of Art Museum Curators and an Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for short-form writing. She was named to Artnet’s “Innovators List” in 2022 and to the Observer’s “Business of Art Power List” in 2024, and has been quoted by outlets such as The New York Times, the Boston Globe, and The Guardian.
An art historian by training, Ryan’s degrees include a PhD in Art History and Archeology from Columbia University and BA in the History of Art and Architecture from Harvard University. Her academic and curatorial research focused on Western art and visual culture from the 19th century onwards, with a special emphasis on artists using film, video, and digital technologies.
