About this Event
About this event:
"Memory ware" is a folk art practice where everyday vessels like bottles, vases, and jugs are decorated by embedding small items and keepsakes into a clay-like substance. Originating in Black communities of the American South and in Victorian Britain, these 3D mosaics were intended to hold personal significance, with objects such as keys, buttons, shells, and beads being used to create the designs.
Join mixed media artist Kat Ryals for a hands-on workshop exploring mosaic upcycling inspired by the craft of memory ware. Participants will use recycled and found materials to create a one-of-a- memory ware vessel.

- Learn about the history and creative traditions of memory ware
- See examples of both historic and contemporary memory ware artworks
- Create your own using a homemade mortar and provided trinkets, beads, and materials
- Experiment with upcycling and reuse as part of the artistic process
- Take home your completed memory ware vessel
