Nancy Lee Farrell passed away peacefully in her bed on June 2nd. Born on March 4th, 1933, she lived her life with fullness and compassion for all those in need and was an inspiration to many. She lived her early years in Vermont where she began her career as an elementary school teacher. She learned from her father to conserve and save which sparked her philanthropic ways which continued throughout the rest of her life. It started when she bought a home in Burlington that served as a hostel for travelers who needed an inexpensive place to rest, and continued with her volunteer work and walks for hunger after she moved to Tacoma.
Nancy moved to Tacoma, Washington when her daughter, Ann, gave birth to her first grandson, Harrison, and soon after a granddaughter, Elliott. She spent countless time with her family and friends in the area while continuing to teach. For years she marched the Proctor District and raised more than $20,000 for the Food Connection and Nativity House. She was passionate about her beliefs and would contribute her efforts at local rallies and protests, especially with La Resistencia at the Northwest Detention Center in the Tacoma tide flats, and with Jewish Voice for Peace, as she was passionate about justice for Palestinians. Her passion for working with children took her all the way to Palestine to tutor children in a refugee camp in the West Bank.
Nancy was an amazing woman who affected so many lives and will be truly missed.
A memorial will be held on 6/22/24 at 2:00 at the Tacoma Unitarian Church located at 1115 S 56th St, Tacoma, WA 98408.
