Elizabeth Lowys was the first person to be accused of witchcraft after the Elizabethan Withcraft Statute was introduced in 1563. Elizabeth was executed 460 years ago to the day on 30th March 1565.
This was to be the beginning of what was to be known as the Essex Witch Trials.
Over 1000 people were accused of witchcraft between 1563 and 1680.
Today, we will be holding a ceremony in memory of Elizabeth Lowys by the memorial plaque in Colchester Castle Park at 2pm.
Previous to this on Thursday 27th March pm at Colchester Castle, historian John Worland will be conducting a talk on Elizabeth's trial leading up to her execution. Please see a post for John's talk on this event page.
We look forward to seeing you.
