About Glenwood Open Space Preserve

In 1993, a concerned group of citizens formed the Friends of Glenwood, who worked to overturn plans to develop what is now Glenwood Open Space Preserve. Nearly a decade later, the City of Scotts Valley was able to protect this land thanks to funding from the California Wildlife Conservation Board. With the support of the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County members, the Land Trust built and currently maintains over seven miles of trail on the East and West sides of the preserve while managing the property for special species protection.

As the Preserve Manager, the Land Trust has the responsibility of protecting and enhancing the habitat for a high number of rare and endangered species, including the Ohlone tiger beetle, Opler’s longhorn moth, and the Scotts Valley spineflower. Through conservation grazing, the cows on the property help create a thriving habitat for these species by keeping the grass short and soil bare.
