Members of The Rourke and their guests are invited to join us for the member-exclusive preview of Courtney Donahue's new exhibit, "Untethered."Artist Statement
This series of work began roughly two years ago. Enthralled by the cloudscapes I regularly observed while on walks, and taken in by the impermanence of the scenes above me, I started to use the forms, colors, and light as inspiration. After countless hours outside and hundreds of reference photos, I have created this body of work to investigate these forms and record moments in time in an indirect way. The title of this exhibition, “Untethered,” references the nature of cloud forms to change and move on, much like the moments on ground below.
These screenprints are generally created in two ways. Some pieces are made in editions—identical multiples printed layer by layer and extensively planned. This type of work allows me to investigate and render the formal elements of the reference material. Other pieces are monotypes—one-of-a-kind prints that are often looser and push abstraction to a further degree. This type of work allows me to respond to the media as I make the piece and play with the concepts of impermanence, change, and evolution.
