We are fundraising for Mel King, a 28-year-old former Dunedin Zumba instructor. Last September, Mel travelled to Germany for life-saving surgery. However, due to her underlying condition, Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she has developed new complications, including May-Thurner syndrome, neurogenic MALS, and other issues.
This doesn't mean the surgery in Germany was unsuccessful, but it does mean that Mel needs additional surgeries abroad. She is currently in Spain undergoing treatment for these new compressions.
Mel's condition has taken a severe toll on her health. She is down to just 39kg, can barely eat, and is struggling with debilitating symptoms and severe malnutrition. Once a vibrant fitness instructor and Zumba leader, Mel is now a shadow of her former self, unable to work or live a normal life.
