Meg Lee & Mike Smith with the Andrzej Baranek Trio

This week, we present a new combination at the club; vocalist Meg Lee alongside saxophonist Mike Smith.
Meg Lee, singer/songwriter was born in Cheshire. She relocated to London where she gained a Performing Arts Diploma from The London School of Musical Theatre. She appeared in London West End shows and toured with acclaimed director Mark Hedges’ in ‘Night On Broadway’ before eventually heading back up North to pursue her first choice career as a solo artist. Lee is now one of the North West’s most popular and in demand contemporary jazz singers. She has been played on Clare Teals BBC Radio 2 jazz show and has shared stages with acts including Rumer and appeared with Sarah Jane Morris at Ronnie Scott’s.
Since first hearing Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee as a teenager, jazz and blues has always been close to Lee’s heart. Now, equally influenced and inspired by contemporary voices such as Melody Gardot and Madeline Peyroux, she has embarked on a spell of intense live work, becoming a regular headliner at jazz venues and festivals around the North West.
With over 20 years in the music profession, Mike Smith has built a formidable reputation as a jazz musician, arranger, composer and session musician. He has worked as a sideman with the likes of Elkie Brooks, Echo & the Bunnymen, Tony Hadley, Kid Creole, Heather Small, ABC and Sandi Thom, and currently works alongside the international brand CREAM as their sax and keys player with K-Klass and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. His soulful playing, extensive repertoire & gorgeous sound is a guaranteed hit with audiences all around the country.
Leading the house trio will be the hard-swinging and inventive pianist, Andrzej Baranek. Baranek’s versatile sound draws on harmonic influences from Bill Evans right through to McCoy Tyner, and his sympathetic and adaptable comping brings out the very best of any horn player he works with. As usual, the line up with be completed by our talented house musicians, Peter Robinson (bass) and Roger Keay (drums).
