Calling all dog lovers, fosters, volunteers, adopters and everyone in between! Join us June 30th for a pilot program hosted by Devan Amundsen, CPDT-KA & CBCC-KA, from Animal Welfare United! This event is open to anyone interested in learning with us and it’s all about getting to know you and our shelter pups- with no strings attached! Devan is bringing his knowledge from the assistance dog world to help us better understand what it takes to successfully match our pups to their people. Making connections with people, whether for a couple of hours or the rest of their lives, is the key to success for a homeless animal. And they can’t do it without our support, so let’s dive in…
Meet your match! What’s it all about?
* Using personalities to match people to dogs has been used for years by assistance dog organizations to match service dogs to clients, and now it's time for shelter dogs to have their turn!
* These personality styles are not permanent, nor are they intended to predict how the dog will behave in a home. Personality does not equal behavior!
* Getting "matched" with a dog does not mean you have to take the dog home, (but we won't stand in your way if you want to.) This pilot project is largely about exploring whether we can use this in animal sheltering like we do in assistance dog training.
* Devan will be assembling a team of people with experience in this to evaluate the personalities of all dogs at the HSIMC facility on June 29th. (This will be a very busy day for the AWU team!)
* We'll send out a survey to foster parents so we can get to know our dogs in foster too!
* On June 30th, the AWU team will be back to help YOU find your own personality style and see which dog(s) in our facility your personality style matches with.
The four personality styles, which are the same for people and dogs, are:
* Driver: Tends to be task-oriented, prefer fast-paced activities, and can be impatient
* Analytical: Tends to be thoughtful and goal-oriented, easygoing, and may be cautious in new situations
* Expressive: Tends to be enthusiastic, relationship-oriented, and tend to "wear their heart on their sleeve"
* Amiable: Tends to be very relationship-oriented, slower-paced, and may be sensitive to what's going on around them.
