About this Event
Meet your local California Native Plants
Sunday February 23rd, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
This IN-PERSON WORKSHOP will be hosted at Alemany Farm.
Instructors: Johanna Gendelman and Sophie Constantinou
Introducing San Franciscan native CA plants to novices and the initiated. We will explore microclimates, soil types and terrain, touring Alemany Farm's unique ecosystems to identify different native plants and preferred growing habits. The workshop will end with an opportunity to take home a native plant (Yerba Buena), our native mint. Printed resources and living plants will help illustrate our local flora.
Johanna Gendelman is a happily retired SF civil servant who recently completed the Master Gardener program of San Francisco and San Mateo counties. A long time member of the CA native plant society, Johanna has worked in native gardens, local restoration sites and is one of the regular volunteers for the native program at Alemany Farms. She also trained as a horticultural therapist.
Sophie Constantinou is the recently elected president of the Yerba Buena Chapter of the Native Plant Society. An avid plant propagator and steward of the Bernal Cut which has transformed 6 acres of public land into a native habitat corridor with the help of a growing group of neighbors. She is interested in the intersection of creative placemaking and community led land management.
Suggested Donation: $35 - no one turned away for lack of funds. Our workshops are donation-based and support the growing and distribution of free produce at Alemany Farm. We encourage everyone to make an offering commensurate with your means, and in an amount that feels powerful to you - such gifts make workshops like these possible. We also do not want money to be a barrier to entry. Please reach out if you would like to attend but are unable to donate. If you can afford to make a bigger donation, your contribution will support the work of Alemany Farm and the opportunity for others with more limited funds to attend this class.
