2021 marks the 122nd anniversary of Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor winning the 1899 world championships in Montreal, Canada. Taylor won the one-mile sprint, to become the first African American to win a world championship in cycling and was our nation's first African American sports hero.

The Major Taylor Trail Keepers bicycle ride in Chicago and its southern suburbs featured a revitalized stretch of the Major Taylor Trail and serves as a fundraiser for the trail's upkeep. With options of 5, 26, 30, 44, 50, 64 or 89 miles, the ride had something for everyone.

Choose from ride options of 5, 26, 30, 44, 50, 64, or 89 miles -- mix and match your choice of five segments to customize your experience. Registration and check in is from 7-7:30. A tribute to Major Taylor and special presentation is from 7:30-7:55am. All rides start at 8:00 a.m. in the heart of Chicago's far South Side, at Morgan Park Commons, 115th Street and the Major Taylor Trail. All riders follow the Major Taylor Trail south and take the Little Calumet River Bridge -- featuring the largest Major Taylor mural ever created -- into Whistler Woods. From Whistler Woods there are two route options, one to Lake Katherine via the scenic Cal-Sag Trail, and another to Lansing Woods. From those destinations there are further options: a loop from Lake Katherine to Sag Quarries, and a loop from Lansing Woods to the Major Taylor gravesite in Glenwood. Combining all the options adds up to 88.6 miles and includes three rest stops, at Whistler Woods, Lake Katherine, and Lansing Woods.

WHAT TO BRING TO AN MTC3 RIDE:

Part of being a good cyclist is having the tools and accessories necessary to be self-sufficient, safe, and ready to ride.  Below is a general list of items to bring and a to-do list to be ready for an MTC3 ride.

Gear Bag:  buy a gear bag (saddle bag is recommended) and stock it with the basics  – extra tube, tire tools, a small multi-tool, and either a mini-pump or a CO2 cartridge set.

Tire Pressure:  pump your tires up before coming to the ride, or bring a floor pump that you can use in the parking lot before the ride.  If you need help, MTC3 ride leaders will be there to help you learn.

Your bike:  Give it a quick inspection.  Spin the wheels to make sure they aren’t rubbing.  Do the gears shift accurately and easily?  Does everything seem to be in order?  This is called an ABC check.  (Air, Brakes, and Chain)

Hydration/Food: Remember to bring water/sports drink and maybe an energy snack (bar, gel, banana, etc).

  • Optional items:  The following will make your ride more enjoyable, but aren’t absolutely necessary.  Cycling gloves, sunglasses, cycling shoes and clipless pedals, padded cycling shorts.
  • Be on Time:  MTC3 rides leave promptly at the advertised time.  Get to the start of the ride with plenty of time to get yourself and your bike ready to roll with soul!
