Wood carver Ray Upson and painter Sally Rugala share the spotlight as Amapola Gallery’s Featured Artists for October.Skilled carver Ray transforms aspen, Spanish cedar, basswood and more into clever caricatures of cowboys and barflies (complete with bar), Native Americans, miners and more. Even Christmas gets the Southwest treatment, with chili Santas for the tree and Mr. and Mrs. Claus and their festive wagonsleigh, complete with eager donkeys ready for their big show. A Paxton Lumber employee for 37 years, Upson knows wood and how to work it.
Multi-talented Sally Rugala loves “the process of transforming a blank surface into a work of art.” Creations include lyrical liquid acrylic pours, Southwest landscapes with her own distinctive spin, photographs and paintings of birds and companion critters and even her own line of jewelry containing miniatures of these. A little paint, a little water—magic!
Transform your Friday by meeting the artists and enjoying their works at their reception, October 3 from 3 to 6 pm. Come to Old Town and Amapola Gallery. We are at 205 Romero, NW, on the Plaza. The show runs the entire month of October.
