Meet the Black Doctors! Listening to Black Patients in CA
About this Event

Sometimes the best treatment is a doctor who listens.

In CA, if you are a Black birthing person or a black person with a chronic illness, you shouldn’t have to advocate for yourself when you're at your most ill.

Is it too much to expect doctors to believe the words you force out of your mouth, amidst spikes of pain, after you've dragged yourself to the urgent care? Yet so often Black patients, words are ignored.

Recent studies have shown that doctors prescribe less pain Medic*tion for Black patients versus white patients with the same condition. Studies have shown doctors often hold outdated and racist beliefs about Black patients. This can lead to life-threatening experiences when doctors are more likely to believe a racist construct than their Black patients. Black birthing persons should survive pregnancy/delivery. And black people in general must be physically well and healthy to end racism.

Join us for a year-long series about Listening to Black Patients.

Meet the Black Doctors (MTBD)s events help the community identify collective actions and practice changes at the clinical, administrative, and training levels that policymakers and health system leaders can take to eliminate the impact of racism on Black Californians’ experiences in healthcare and to improve their health outcomes.

Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches (LAM) and its long-standing network of community and faith-based organizations include are partnering with Blue Shield Promise, Dr. Vincent Anthony, MD (kidney disease physician) and LaDera Park Healthy Aging program to host a year-long community conversation about change.

Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches commonly, called "LAM" launched the Meet the Black Doctors (MTBD) campaign to shine a light on the failing CA Health Services/System. Effective community partnerships can save lives. LAM is partnering with FBOs and CBOs, health plans, small practices, IPAs to build and support a pipeline of qualified and culturally prepared health professionals and physicians.
