Tina Lonski is a retired English and journalism teacher at the high
school and college levels, most recently at the MSU School of Journalism for 16 years. She is a Detroit native and lives in East Lansing. She has degrees from Eastern Michigan University and Michigan State University. Besides teaching, she has worked as a newspaper reporter and a communication specialist for the Michigan Dental Association, American Dental Association and Michigan Nurses Association.
Tina has published four books, collections of short stories about her life
in Michigan:
- A Transplanted Yooper: Mostly True Stories of Michigan’s U.P.
- Barn Raising: Stories of a Vanishing American Legacy
- The Bootleg Buggy: Stories of My Polish Family
- As My Dad Used to Say: Family Stories of MSU’s Legendary Ralph
Young
Her books have won awards from Writer’s Digest, National Federation of Press Women and Michigan Press Women.
About the books:
A Transplanted Yooper takes readers on adventures in Michigan’s
Upper Peninsula – the U.P. From a memorable ride across the newly
opened Mackinac Bridge to ghost towns, abandoned lighthouses and bears in the yard, readers learn about the Yooper life.
Barn Raising stories visits barn in and around Blissfield, the small town in Lenawee County where Tina grew up. Readers will follow her to a round barn and a Mail Pouch Tobacco barn, as well as learning about a scary barn bull and a “mystery barn” with a pile of bones inside.
The Bootleg Buggy tells about Tina’s Polish family. Her grandpa was a bootlegger – one of many among the working class Polish immigrant families in Detroit trying to eke out a living in the depths of the Great Depression. For years, the family story was that grandpa used to buggy to deliver his home brew around the neighborhood. This and other stories are a delightful tribute to Tina’s Polish heritage.
As My Dad Used to Say tells the intriguing tale of Ralph Young, an
influential father of today’s mighty Michigan State University sports
family. Through his daughter, Janet Young Hines, readers glimpse the colorful life of the illustrious athletic director of 33 years. Travel back to earlier days in East Lansing in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, where the stories capture the family life with tales of trips to sporting events, cookouts for MSU teams and even a murder in an East Lansing neighborhood.
