Meet-the-Artist: Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr.1-3PM on Feb. 15
The Butler is pleased to showcase Kennedy's work as our Black History Month exhibition on display in our new Segall Print Gallery!
Kennedy is an American printer, book artist, and papermaker best know for social and political commentary, particularly in printed posters. Using hand presses, he produces large editions of wildly colorful typographically driven posters from handset wood and metal type, oil-based inks, and eco-friendly and affordable chipboard.
Kennedy is known for using words of popular activists like Rosa Parks and peaceful protests like the Selma to Montgomery marches to illustrate the names of the lost lives during these movements. Many of the posters are inspired from proverbs, quotes Kennedy locates, or quotes that potential clients provide. The words themselves are central to Kennedy's work, serving not just as visuals but to convey messages that are thought-provoking and sometimes controversial.
