The book was a finalist for the 2023 Young Lions Fiction Award, longlisted for the 2024 Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award, and shortlisted for the Center for Fiction 2023 First Novel Prize. It was also named a best book of 2023 by NPR.
Eskor David Johnson is a writer from Trinidad and Tobago and the United States. His writing has appeared in BOMB Magazine, and McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern. A graduate of Harvard University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he was the recipient of the Richard Yates Short Story Prize, the Maytag Fellowship and the Teaching-Writing Fellowship, he currently lives in New York City.
Tony is a dedicated reader, content creator, and literary advocate who explores books across genres, cultures, and time periods. As the founder of Life On Books, a platform dedicated to in-depth book discussions, recommendations, and analysis, Tony engages a growing community of readers through thoughtful reviews, video essays, and his podcast. His reading interests range from contemporary and classic literature to history, philosophy, and overlooked literary gems. In addition to running a thriving book club and a podcast where they dissect literature in conversation with fellow book lovers, Tony is passionate about promoting intellectual curiousity and literacy.
