Practice the meditative process of suminagashi, or ink floating, a Japanese paper marbling art at least as old as the 12th century. Learn creative techniques, including color mixing and overmarbling (printing a paper twice), to help connect you more deeply with the natural world and yourself. You’ll float ink in dynamic patterns on water and print unique images on paper. Leave with a set of 5 notecards made of 100% cotton paper with Kraft envelopes and various practice papers that can be enjoyed on their own or used as background for writing, painting, drawing, and more. Through the beauty and simplicity of suminagashi, we celebrate curiosity, intuition, and surprise.
Bring a place- or landscape-themed picture or nature item (like a leaf or stick or flower) that inspires you, if you’d like. No experience necessary.
Limited to 15 registrants $40 (includes supplies)
“This was even better than I expected: fun, meditative and accessible all at once. I'm hooked! Dawn is a great instructor, generous with her materials and expertise. The group of women at my table were encouraging and inquisitive, making the entire evening pretty magical." - Stacey K.
“The workshop was delightful. I got the hang of it quite easily. Dawn's explanations were excellent and my results exceeded my expectations. Be sure to only use very warm water for the best results. Makes me wish I had more than two hands!”
“Dawn comes with a wealth of information about Suminagashi--its history, and her own experience to share with students. It's relaxing, fun and very satisfying to play with ink and water. I'd highly recommend her classes."
