About this Event

Join us as Eboracum Early Dance delves deeper into the past and explores some of the earliest written records of historic dance.

This workshop we'll be looking at some of the earliest known forms of dance such as the carole (circle or line dances) and the estampie as well as delving into the Gresley Manuscript, the earliest known text of English dances.

The Gresley manuscript is a small notebook written by John Banys and dated to 1500 (plus or minus 20 years). It contains 92 dance titles , but only 26 choreographies, some music and no step descriptions. The dances have been painstakingly recreated by dance historians over the past few years and we will be investigating several different interpretations in this workshop.

The workshop will cover a selection of dances and is suitable for beginners as well as those more experienced. No need to bring a partner just suitable comfy shoes for dancing. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided. The workshop will be held at St Olaves Church Hall in York. Tickets are £10 and should be purchased in advance.

Join us for an afternoon of Medieval Dance.
