Biographies

Chair – Lauren Sutherland QC has advocacy experience gained over nearly 30 years both as a Solicitor in private practice and at the Bar. She has considerable experience in catastrophic injury cases and has a particular interest and expertise in cerebral palsy, cancer and brain injury cases. As a Solicitor she gained experience in the area of nursing practice and this continued when she called to the bar and she had responsibility to oversee the nursing section in the Vale of Leven Public Inquiry. She has also considerable experience in the area of Solicitors professional negligence.

Ann Logan – Ann is a Partner of Balfour+Manson and has specialised in clinical negligence law for over 25 years, she is an Accredited Specialist with the Law Society and an Accredited Clinical Negligence Specialist and Assessor for the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. Ann has extensive experience of high value catastrophic claims, particularly birth trauma cases, including cerebral palsy and stillbirth. Ann deals with a wide variety of claims including surgical, GP, delayed diagnosis of cancer and dental cases and lectures to medical and legal professionals, often focussing on the Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board decision and informed consent. Ann has contributed to Government consultations including on No Fault Compensation, the Clinical Negligence Pre action Protocol, the Duty of Candour, and recently on the proposed Scottish Patient Safety Commissioner.

Dr Niall Cameron – Dr Niall Cameron is a recently retired Glasgow based GP with extensive experience as an expert GP witness. As well as having worked for many years as a GP in a busy Glasgow inner-city practice, Niall has been a GP appraiser, a Lead Appraiser and latterly served as NHS Education for Scotland (NES) National Appraisal Adviser for Medical Appraisal. Niall has been instructed in many GP negligence cases over the years both for defence organisations and for Pursuers, has given evidence in the Court of Session and the Royal Courts of Justice and is one of the country’s most respected independent expert witnesses.

Robert Milligan QC – Robert has a particular interest in product liability claims, fatal claims and catastrophic injuries. He was instructed by the defenders in the Vioxx litigation and acts for the pursuers in the group litigations relating to metal-on-metal hips and vaginal mesh implants. He speaks and writes regularly on personal injury related matters, particularly in relation to damages. Robert is a legal chairman of the War Pensions Appeal Tribunal and sits on the SRU Discipline Panel. Robert is a member of the Scottish Civil Justice Council Working Group on Group Proceedings.

Andrew Pollock – Andrew Pollock is a Partner of Peacock Johnston, Solicitors, Glasgow and is one of Scotland’s most experienced clinical negligence Solicitors. He is a member of the Law Society of Scotland Medical Negligence Law Specialisation Panel, a member of the Scottish Legal Aid Board Legal Services Case Committee; was previously Course Leader in Medical Law at Edinburgh University’s Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice; as well as having served on the Greater Glasgow Local Medical Research Ethics Committee and as a Member of the No-Fault Compensation Group chaired by Professor Sheila MacLean.

Norma Shippin - Norma joined the Central Legal Office (CLO) as a Litigation Solicitor in 1984, having completed her traineeship in private practice. She was appointed Managing Partner in 1995 and subsequently Director in 2013. Norma has over 34 years’ experience of providing litigation and employment law services to the NHS in Scotland.

She has a special interest in clinical negligence and has been accredited as a specialist in that field with the Law Society of Scotland for over 22 years.
