The Friends of St John’s Kirk of Perth are delighted to announce an insightful and captivating talk, The Treasures of Mediaeval Perth, by the esteemed historian Dr. Kylie Murray. This event will be held in the atmospheric Knox Chapel at St John’s Kirk on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 2pm.Dr. Murray, a renowned expert in medieval Scottish history, will guide attendees through the intriguing stories and cultural significance of Perth’s medieval heritage. Her talk promises to reveal a wealth of historical treasures—from artifacts and architectural marvels to the influential people and pivotal events that helped shape Perth during the medieval period. With her deep expertise and engaging presentation style, Dr. Murray is set to bring the richness of Perth’s past to life, offering a unique perspective on this historic town.
By way of an appetiser, Dr Murray poses these questions, "What do a 12th-century graffitied text now in the Vatican, a 13th-century pewter mirror-case, and a documentary seal alluding to James I of Scotland all have in common? They are remarkable testimonies of the cultural richness of Perthshire’s past. Discover the religious orders at Coupar Angus and Perth Charterhouse as generators of cultural identity; meet some intriguing Renaissance Perthshire book-collectors; and explore objects excavated in the environs of St John’s."
Learn how Perthshire housed texts, images, and objects of national and even international significance. This talk focuses on the items and artefacts that show Perth to be culturally alert and alive with European strands of influence at a time when Scotland’s place in Europe was a live issue: exactly as it is today.
