Kristy Alger is an organiser, activist, theorist and writer living in lutruwita (Tasmania) on mumurimina country. She is the current sitting president for Animal Liberation Tasmania, and formerly co-founded a Tasmanian animal save chapter. She has entered my tenth year of living vegan, and six years of activism. During which, she has engaged in vigils, protests, blockades and occupations of slaughterhouses and facilities, and am currently focusing my attentions on writing, theorising, and creating grassroots campaigns to effect structural change at a community level.
In this workshop Kristy intends to explain how media advertising uses certain cultural, political and consumer tropes as a means to encourage increased consumption of animals and the generalised acceptance of anti-animal sentiment that is prevalent throughout society. Using specific advertising examples from the past 100 years, she will explain the specific cultural and historical contexts of those adverts so we can better counter those messages. Moving forwards, Kristy will provide examples of how individuals have countered or subverted media messaging, including the subversion of industry based social media campaigns, and the outcomes.
**This session may be live streamed pending border restrictions.
Details on how to log into the festival for a few $$$ will be shared soon !!
