Access to alternative sources of information is one of the characteristics of liberal democracy. Central Europe is a region where citizens experienced censorship and the dominance of party and state media before 1989. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, plurality and a free environment for independent journalism emerged in individual post-communist countries. However, a free media system is very fragile, and the recent past has shown that journalists face constant pressure.The discussion will focus on the current situation in the region, but will also address specific cases where free media in Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary have been threatened. As will be pointed out, in the case of the latter country, we can document a direct link between the limitation of journalists' freedom and the retreat of democracy.

About the speaker:
Martin Štefek received his PhD. in 2017 at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Czech Republic. He has been an assistant professor at the Department of the Political Science, Faculty of Arts, Charles University since 2016. In 2022, he joined The Institute of Contemporary History, Czech Academy of Sciences.
His teaching and research focus on comparative politics and contemporary history. His fields of interest include party systems, regime transformations, the history of Communism and theories of totalitarianism.
