About this Event
Media and communication masterclass
Tuesday 31 May Adelaide, 9am to 5pm

Our media and communication masterclass will help you find the story in your research and learn how to achieve media coverage that is true to your science AND engages your audience.

Meet local journalists and learn how to ensure your research is reported accurately.

Practice being interviewed on tape on and in front of camera by real journalists.

Find out how the media works and how you can make it work for you.

Gain confidence in talking about your research so that it has impact with media, government, industry and other stakeholders.

Conveying the complexity of your research, your life’s work, into a 30-second grab for the media or one-minute elevator pitch to funders or even a Vice Chancellor can be hard. The solution is to shape the essence of your science into a story.

This is a full day hands-on workshop where you will learn how to effectively communicate about your work to the public, stakeholders, government, industry and the media.

You will meet and talk with journalists from television, print and radio; and you’ll get the chance to do some practice interviews.

The course covers: television (with practice interviews); radio (with practice interviews); handling tricky questions and staying out of trouble; print and online media; developing your communication plan; social media and becoming an ‘expert’.

The course will be run by two of our presenters:

Niall Byrne: 32 years’ experience in science story telling including strategic science media and communication, pitching and crisis communication. Currently working on: communication planning for key research teams at Curtin University; Strategic advice to the NHMRC; and media strategies for Exciton Science, Astro 3D and AIMS. Read more.

Sarah Brooker: 22 years’ experience in translating science to English specialising in stakeholder engagement, media training, mentoring and events. Currently managing the Science in Public team and business development; strategic communication for the Australian Institute of Physics and media training. Read more.

Tanya Ha: 22 years in talking, writing and presenting science. Social media guru. Stakeholder engagement. Speaker and MC. Currently managing social media and research prizes for the National Stem Cell Foundation and coordinating publicity for National Science Week. Read more.
