Join us for our annual Medalta International Artist in Residence (MIAIR) solo shows. This year we will be featuring two artists: Kasia Sosnowski and Tory MacKay.
MAY 24 | DOORS @ 6 PM | OPENING REMARKS @ 6:15 PM
These shows are a celebration of the time our year-long residents spend at Medalta. Notably, Kasia Sosnowski, a permanent resident, also serves as the Residency Coordinator for our program.
Kasia Sosnowskis "all hell for a basement, and I keep digging," explores what it means to live in "Gas City" Medicine Hat, Alberta. Playing on the famous Kipling quote*, she unravels the layers of Medicine Hat's contemporary life and rich history, from its abundant natural gas to its cowboy culture. With nods to Saturday morning cartoons and a playful edge, this exhibition invites viewers to wonder what lies beneath the surface of small-town life in Alberta.
Tory MacKay's "Stone Cold Dyke" explores the powerful and ambiguous nature of womanhood, particularly for those with certain dispositions. It delves into the artist's fascination with water systems and altered landscapes, intertwined with themes of womanhood, queerness, and gender identity.
More information to come soon about each individuals exhibition.
Admission is by donation.
We hope to see you there!
*“This part of the country seems to have all hell for a basement, and the only trap door appears to be in Medicine Hat.”
- Rudyard Kipling
