This year's program will include artistic performances, international food sampling, and as always, engaging interfaith conversations. Let's us all be a blessing to one another.
A History of Mecklenburg’s Interfaith Gatherings: Five Decades of Unity, Gratitude, and Community
For nearly fifty years, Mecklenburg County’s diverse faith communities have come together each fall in a spirit of unity, gratitude, and service. What began in 1975 as a visionary partnership between Rabbi Harold Krantzler and Rev. Dr. Sidney Freeman has grown into one of the region’s most cherished
interfaith traditions.
For decades, the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service welcomed hundreds—some years, thousands—from across the county to share in inspiring messages, uplifting music, and acts of service that touched countless lives. In times of crisis and in seasons of celebration, it became a living symbol of resilience, solidarity, and hope.
As MeckMIN’s commitment to equity and inclusion deepened, the gathering evolved to reflect the voices and experiences of the entire community. In 2022, Indigenous voices were centered for the first time. Two years later, in 2024, the event was reimagined as the Mecklenburg Interfaith Friendsgiving—a vibrant, multicultural celebration of gratitude expressed through the arts, meaningful conversations, and a shared meal.
Today, Interfaith Friendsgiving honors a half-century of history while looking ahead to a future rooted in unity in diversity. More than a single evening, it represents an ongoing movement to build belonging, connection, and community across every line of faith, culture, and experience.
