Description:Even though it makes up nearly 25% of all of the streams on Spotify, Hip Hop remains pop music’s least understood genre. Using a combination of lecture and examples, we will define what exactly a rap flow is and explore the musical foundations and vocal techniques that make rap verses regionally, rhythmically, and energetically distinct. The goal of this class is to give participants an understanding of rap flow from a musical perspective, as well as an open mind as to how musical principles apply under the umbrella of hip hop. There will be chances to integrate these lessons in collaborative rap cyphers. (warning, explicit lyrics)
All instruments (including singers) are welcome.
