An evening event with Maine poet Laureate Julia Bouwsma.

Description: Join us on Thursday evening for an event with Maine Poet Laureate Julia Bouwsma and educators across Maine. There will be an opportunity to network with other teachers, listen to a poetry reading, and even share your own poems. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided with a cash bar available.

MCELA's Cancellation and Refund Policy:

  • Payment by check or purchase order (PO) is due at registration.
  • Purchase orders for registrations will be invoiced promptly, and payment must be received at least one week before the event.
  • If space is available, registrations accompanied by payment may be accepted on the day of an event.
  • Cancellations up to two weeks before the event will be fully reimbursed.
  • Registrations may be transferred to another party.

Keynote Speaker: Kelsey Stoyanova2022 Maine Teacher of the Year

Stoyanova is an 8th grade language arts teacher at Reeds Brook Middle School, part of Regional School Unit (RSU) 22 in Hampden, Maine. Stoyanova has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with an English concentration, a master’s degree in Education with a literacy focus, and is working toward her Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership — all as a University of Maine Black Bear.

Stoyanova is passionate about reading and helping students find an authentic love of reading through integrating a strong foundation of independent reading in her classroom. That passion really shined when she was selected as a grant recipient by the Book Love Foundation in 2020.

Poetry Night: Julia Bouwsma Maine Poet Laureate

Julia Bouwsma lives off-the-grid in the mountains of western Maine, where she is a poet, farmer, and small-town librarian. She is the author of two poetry collections: Midden (Fordham University Press, 2018) and Work by Bloodlight (Cider Press Review, 2017). She is the Library Director for Webster Library in Kingfield, Maine.

Bouwsma is the recipient of the 2019 and 2018 Maine Literary Awards for Poetry Book, the 2016-17 Poets Out Loud Prize, the 2015 Cider Press Review Book Award. She has received writing residencies from the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Monson Arts, and Annex Arts in Castine.

She contributes poems and book reviews to Cutthroat, Poetry Daily, Poetry Northwest, RHINO, River Styx, and other journals. Bouwsma, a former Managing Editor for Alice James Books, currently serves as an instructor at University of Maine at Farmington and on the Community Advisory Board for Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance.
