Joburg-based McCoy Mrubata returns to his native land to celebrate his 65th birthday and promote a new album, Lullaby for Khayoyo, recently recorded in the US with New-Yorkers and South African musicians. It was released last year on a New York-based jazz label RopeaDope.Originally hailing from Cape Town’s Langa township, the internationally celebrated Mrubata grew up immersed in the many sounds of South African music, from traditional Xhosa works, to the sounds of the church, to the jam sessions of Cape Town’s jazz master musicians. Drawing upon the rich saxophone tradition established by elder masters like Winston Mankunku and Ezra Ngcukana, Mrubata ultimately forged a playing style that both honours and expands upon the richly lyrical saxophone legacy of South Africa.
"Capetonians are in for a treat of new songs," says McCoy. "They can expect great music comprised of groovy sounds, energetic African rhythms and heart warming ballads especially the tittle track, Lullaby For Khayoyo."
Mrubata will perform with a quartet made of some of Cape Town's finest musicians including bass player Wesley Rustin and drummer Tefo Mahola.
