MCASD presents the work of American sculptor Beverly Pepper at Westfield UTC & invites you to make your own sculptures with these art kits!
About this Event

MCASD invites you to enjoy another Family ArtLAB: Take-Home Edition, Land Art.

A playful artmaking experience for the whole family, this project will have you experimenting with materials to evoke some
of Pepper's techniques and explore the use of
the landscape throughout her career.

This project will look closely at The First Amphitheater (1965) and Severio Column (1978). When we say closely, we mean zoom in and pay attention to each section of this artwork. What shapes do you recognize? How do you think it was made? What do you think it is made of?

Many of Pepper’s sculptures are installed and integrated into the landscape around them. Want to experiment with creating your landscape sculpture? Inspired by the materials and the landscape in Beverly Pepper’s work, we will experiment with shapes and colors using cardboard and paint. All necessary materials will be provided in the art kit. You're welcome to create with us onsite or at home!

Have fun, be creative, and please share your finished creations by tagging @mcasandiego and @WestfieldUTC.

About the Artist: Beverly Pepper (1922–2020) was a prolific American artist known for her monumental sculptures, land art, and site-specific installations. She remained independent from any particular art movement, experimental in her practice, and created work out of unique materials such as a sheet of metal, trunks of trees, and industrial debrief. During your visit to Westfield UTC, be sure to take a closer look at The First Amphitheater (1965) and Severio Column (1978) on display between Palm Plaza and Din Tai Fung.
