About this Event

The Place and Built Environment Subject at the University of Glasgow, would like to invite interested colleagues, from academia, policy and beyond, to an event on "Mayors - exploring the promises and pitfalls". This will be held at 4pm in the Clarice Pears Building (University of Glasgow) on Wednesday, November 26 at 4pm. We will be joined for a guest lecture by Prof John Tomaney from UCL, who will offer perspectives on Mayors and the prospects of establishing them in Scottish city-regions and regions.Responding to John's talk will be Dr Caroline Brown (RTPI) and Prof Iain Docherty (University of Stirling). With the regional development picture in Scotland somewhat less defined than what we see for England, this lecture will give critical consideration to whether Mayors are an important step to take in setting out leadership and accountability for our sub-national settings. Conversely, we explore the potential risks and constraints that might confront such political leaders. Consideration of Mayors - and how they secure future regional decentralisation, for example - must also give consideration to the tripartite politics at play in the Devolved Administrations. The session will be of interest to urban scholars more broadly, those interested in the challenges of politics, policies and practice, and students with an interest in cities and regional governance.
