About this Event
Bird in Hand is thrilled to host author Maylis de Kerangal for a conversation with Professor Derek Schilling as part of her March 2025 residency at Johns Hopkins University, entitled Les Ponts des arts.
Author Maylis de Kerangal (b. 1967) won France's coveted Prix Médicis in 2010 for her breakout novel The Bridge, a choral narrative about the building of a suspension bridge. In the runaway success The Heart (2014), now translated into more than thirty languages, she explored how an organ transplant fashions a complex web of relationships in the wake of tragedy.
Unfolding in atypical settings from the Trans-Siberian railway (Eastbound) to a hydraulic power station (Seyvoz) and decorative artists' studios (Painting Time), her fictions ask how work and the workplace affect the senses, communication, and human action.
Marking the anniversary of the Frances Scott Key Bridge tragedy, the residency Le Pont des arts is made possible with the generous assistance of the French Embassy in the United States.
