About this Event

Join us as we honor the sacred fire and give offerings of gratitude to our ancestors and to the Spirit of life itself.

Fire ceremony could easily be considered to be the heart of Maya spiritual practice. It is the physical practice which facilitates interaction with the energies of creation, the nawales.

Maya fire ceremonies are beautiful affairs, full to the brim of colour, of fragrant incenses and flowers, and of delicious words. This is where we make our offerings for all we have received in our lives, where we make our offerings for the things we wish to repair and where we ask for our needs to be met. The ceremonies usually take place over the course of around 2 – 3 hours; they consist of building a beautiful design, somewhat like a mandala, using sugar, incenses, colourful candles, aromatic bark, herbs, cacao and pitch pine.

There is then an invocation of the energies of the directions and their guardians, an invocation of the ancestors and an invocation of the sacred sites and altars around the world. The fire is then lit and each of the energies of the days invoked and offerings made to each of them. The thirteen aspects of each energy are counted as we give thanks, ask for forgiveness and ask for what we need from each of the nawales. When all 260 day have been addressed, we then finally close the directions and finish the fire.

Each day corresponds to one of 260 days of the sacred Maya calendar.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC DAY:

The energy of Sunday 23rd October is 9 Aj. Aj represents a number of properties associated with the masculine energy within traditional societies. These include leadership, strength and courage, the typical qualities of the wise old grandfather. On the day 9 Aj these qualities are combined with the number of the divine feminine, and of life itself.

The energy of nawal Aj is seen as a benevolent and helpful energy, after all it represents the sustenance of society. When we take that energy in combination with the more feminine compassion and nurture from the number 9, it can be seen that this day has a very pleasant potential.

The number 9 also brings an independent streak. It represents the divine feminine and this energy is also strong, after all it is the representation of life itself. With this strength and independence combining with the nawal of the spinal column, this can be seen as a day where the energy supports you to stand up for yourself. The additional feminine properties of the nine soften this beautifully to give a compassionate, yet self-assured energy.

It is a day to nurture the leader within. This is a day to look to the female leaders within your community, the mothers and the grandmothers, for their support and guidance. It is a day to engage both compassion and authority in leadership.

On Aj days, we ask for harmony in our homes and communities, and 9 Aj suggests the empowerment of female leadership in order to bring that to life. The number 9 can also represent life itself, so this ceremony could be seen as one to bring your life into a state of harmony through acceptance of your own authority.
