The May Pole dancing tradition on May Day, has taken place in many European countries for 1000's of years. It celebrated the arrival of Spring by dancing originally around decorated trees. Nowadays dancers weave ribbons around a pole rather than a tree. The dance creates a multi-coloured pattern which creeps steadily down the pole. All ages are welcome to come and dance around the Maypole, and no prior knowledge or fancy footwork is needed. If interest necessitates we will setup more than one pole. Otherwise we will weave and unwind ribbons on the same pole until all who want to dance have had a turn. Come early to talk about the tradition of this cultural event. This will be a great celebration, bring finger foods to share. A drum circle will follow.
