About this Event
Meet at the day use parking area, (fee $10/$9) EAST of Highway 1, past the Ranger Station to Central Trail and large Day Use parking lot.
Hike to the Pygmy Forest and search for Sugarstick (Allotropa virgata) along the way. Sugarstick is a colorful mycoheterotrophic plant in the Ericaceae family and not the only color to be found in May.
From the saltpoint.org website, "The Pygmy Forest is unique. The trees' diminutive stature is a result of a harsh environment characterized by highly acidic, nutrient-deficient soil, coupled with a subterranean hardpan layer that obstructs drainage and inhibits deep root growth."
Trailhead to the Pygmy Forest is 1.5 miles with a minimal elevation gain (3 mi. total); possible longer excursion of a 5 mile loop. If you regularly hike with poles, please bring them, along with a hat, boots, snacks (bonus points for salty/sweet/acid combos!). Cell Service is generally strong for this location. Give 45 minutes to drive from Jenner to Salt Point—meet at the EAST side of the highway, at the parking lot beyond the ranger station/entry kiosk.
