Welcome to our May evening forum with the Cambridge Prehospital Care Programme. This event will focus on the role of blood products in a pre-hospital setting for the first part, before switching themes to discuss trauma from the perspective of Dr Ben Swift, a Forensic Pathologist who is no stranger to our programme, having delivered a very successful lecture at our relaunch evening in December 2022.
Therefore, we have not two but THREE incredible speakers lined up for you.
Our first speaker is Dr Ed Barnard with his talk entitled ‘Making blood whole again’
This talk aims to provide a summary of blood transfusion from the 17th Century through to 2024 – providing the necessary background knowledge on all clinical trials relevant to optimising blood transfusion strategies for major trauma, including an evaluation of recent synthesised data that compares component therapy with whole blood. The talk includes the background rationale and methodology to the currently-recruiting UK Defence-Civilian collaborative clinical research trial (SWiFT) – the first randomised controlled trial of component therapy vs platelet-rich low-titre O whole blood in major trauma.

Ed is a UK Defence academic consultant in emergency and prehospital emergency medicine (EM), who has been based in Cambridge since 2017. After completion of four years of General Duties serving around the globe, Ed undertook clinical emergency medicine training in the West Midlands, Bristol, and South-West Peninsula. In 2013 he was selected to undertake a higher degree at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research / USAF 59th Medical Wing in San Antonio, Texas. This work centered on the prehospital management of critical hypovolaemia and traumatic cardiac arrest, including whole blood, chest compressions, REBOA, SAAP, and ECLS. On return to the UK, Ed completed fellowship training in prehospital EM in the East of England. In 2018, he was awarded his PhD and was appointed as an Honorary Consultant at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and at East Anglian Air Ambulance, where he co-setup a regional research group. In 2023, Ed was appointed as an RCEM/NIHR Associate Professor, and as the UK Defence Professor of Emergency Medicine. He lives in Cambridge with his wife (Gemma – a paediatric oncologist at CUH) and his two young daughters.

Our second speaker, Major Matt Ellington will continue to share his expertise with regards to prehospital blood products with his talk entitled "Blood far forward and dried plasma"
This talk will cover the benefits of plasma transfusion in trauma, including the supporting evidence base for plasma transfusion. It will also cover the practical and logistical challenges in implementing blood products in prehospital systems. Moving into the present and beyond, I will give a comprehensive overview of the ARMY funded collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant and commercial sponsors to develop a UK sovereign dried plasma capability, based in Cambridge.

Maj Matt Ellington joined 254 MMR and the Army Reserves in 2014.
Since starting specialty training in Anaesthesia in 2016, Maj Ellington has deployed as a Reservist to Kenya, Belize, Croatia, Kosovo, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Afghanistan on Op TORAL 7. He received a 3* commendation on his return from Afghanistan for medical care given during a Taliban attack in December 2018.
Maj Ellington has particularly enjoyed academic military medicine. Since joining the Reserves, he has published multiple peer-reviewed papers in BMJ Military Health. He has also completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education, A Diploma in Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine, a Diploma in Immediate Medical Care, a Masters in Trauma Sciences and has recently been awarded funding from Defence Research and Clinical Innovation (RCI) to undertake a PhD in major transfusion, and development & validation of a UK-derived dried plasma product.
Matt lives near Cambridge with his wife, Helen. They enjoy travel, fitness and food. Matt is currently training for his first Ironman in July 2024, although progress is very slow.
Our 3rd and final (but by no means least) speaker is Dr Ben Swift. Ben’s talk is entitled ‘ Forensics of chest trauma’ and will give a real insight into why people with chest trauma die, and what is found post mortem. This understanding will help us better understand what is happening to the seriously injured patient in front of us at the roadside.
Dr Swift is a Member of the Home Secretary's Register of Forensic Pathologists, a Consultant Forensic Pathologist, an honorary consultant at EHAAT and Honorary Senior Lecturer at QMUL and is the current President of the British Association in Forensic Medicine. Dr Swift is no stranger to the PCP and we are very excited to welcome him back.
