May is Tea in the Garden Time

Have fun and take in the exquisite Arts and Crafts setting together with a bespoke talk by Director Lee Hale, and an informal afternoon tea style buffet on the terrace.

Lee will be talking about ‘Winterbourne Intervenes: Environmental Challenges and Sustainability’. He will be engaging us in hearing about the challenges and opportunities of running a vibrant heritage attraction whilst implementing new sustainable practices and meeting environmental challenges. Lee will highlight Winterbourne’s achievements, failures, and future alongside the site’s important role as a place of education, wellbeing, and enjoyment for almost 100,000 visitors annually.

Biography: Lee Hale

Lee is currently Director of Winterbourne House & Garden, the University of Birmingham’s botanic garden and an Arts Council accredited museum. Winterbourne is now a top-rated visitor attraction and educational resource, and its collections include the University of Birmingham Herbarium, local and industrial archives, national plant collections and The Winterbourne Press. The site is also home to The Winterbourne Centre of Horticulture, a Royal Horticultural Society accredited training centre.

Lee’s interest in the relationship between heritage and horticulture led him to undertake a Master of Arts degree in International Heritage Management at the University of Birmingham and a Master of Horticulture degree from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Lee is particularly passionate about local, social, and industrial history. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society and a full member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture. He serves on several boards including those of the Lapworth Museum, the Virtual Museum of Printing, the Centre for Printing History & Culture and The International Centre for Heritage. He is also a Fellow of both the Lunar Society and the Royal Society of Arts. Lee is a trustee at the Merlin Trust which supports training opportunities for young horticulturists, and a trustee and director at Churchill Forge Mill which seeks to preserve unique industrial archaeology.

The talk will be followed by a chance to explore the house and garden at no additional cost and enjoy an afternoon tea style buffet on the Edwardian terrace. The tea will include tea, coffee, soft drinks, vegan, seafood and meat platters and sweet treats/cakes catered by the University of Birmingham catering professionals.

The cost for members is: £25.

The cost for non-members is: £35.
