Project Background

Proven research has shown that the social and economic conditions in which people live matter greatly to their wellness. Income, jobs, education, transportation, access to information, and the physical and social environment, all determine one’s wellness. Public health experts call these the “social determinants” of health.

AAPIs as a minority community, hey experience insurmountable cultural integration and language barriers, thus they are also subjected to the same socio- economic health determinants as all other disadvantaged – underserved populations.

But due to the concept of AAPI as a “Model Minority “myth, they are often overlooked. Thus, to honor May is Asian Heritage Month, Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce will engage five outstanding Symposium speakers to help our audience gain a better understanding about the AAPI communities ‘s most concrete challenges in wellness while presenting a broad range of socio-economic determinants that dictate a person’s quality of life.

Speaker Program:

Virginia Asian Foundations’ Symposium on Health Determinants of the AAPI Community: A Symposium to celebrate May Is Asian Heritage Month is a two – prong program with 5 outstanding Speakers who will:

• One, help health care providers to make better planning when it comes to what are most cost-effectiveness and return on investment in health care services, allowing to track results and connect the dots between non-health policies and health outcomes, and act on these socioeconomic factors.

• Two, present facts and data about socio-economic trends that influences community wellness positively.

Who should attend?

• With that in mind, we hope our event will trigger questions for planners to think about how to determine which directions matter most regarding which intended outcomes are best to be used to serve the complex AAPI communities.

• Join us to meet state policy makers, legislators, immigrant specialists, researchers, academia, and health care providers who will offer their insights on the determinants of wellness when they collaborate on wellness, workforce development, housing, transportation, access to broadband, and the environment to benefit the AAPI and community at large.

• Others in the audience include employers, the schools, academic leaders, sociologists, real estate professionals, housing experts, city planners, etc… .

7:15 pm to 7:30 pm: Asian cultural performance program with North-Central-South Asian countries.

7:30 pm to 8:00 pm: Exhibit Resources Tables (EXPO) and Wellness Business and Professional Networking continues

8:00 pm: Program adjourns.
