We’re excited to invite you to volunteer with us at Schibig Lakeview Nature Preserve. The preserve is parkland open space and is South Puget Sound Prairie one of the rarest ecosystems in the country. This prairie is adjacent to 60-acres of wetland that connects it to the 61000 acres of forest woodland and savanna at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). Over 72 bird species have been observed on this property including nests from species like red-tailed hawks.
Join us on Friday May 16 from 1:30 to 4:30 PM to restore essential prairie habitat. You will gain valuable insights into ecological restoration and our innovative approach to land conservation. We’ll start with a walk of the site and have restoration professionals on hand to answer questions about plants restoration and Forterra.
What we are doing: We’ll be removing the blackberry and other invasive species along Clover Creek to help establish a healthy riparian buffer. If there is time and interest we also will remove invasive species around the recently planted Garry Oak trees. It’s a great opportunity to look for birds give back to the community and learn about this special space.
What to bring: Please dress for the weather (in layers to stay cool/warm and dry). Snacks drinks tools and gloves will be provided.
Where to park: Rainier View Christian Church has graciously allowed us to use their parking lot (12305 Spanaway Loop Rd S Tacoma WA 98444).
Where to meet: We will be meeting on the opposite side of Spanaway Loop Rd S. Follow the Forterra Event Signs.
Date and time: Friday May 16 2025 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
