For this campout, we get to spend the night at the Omaha Zoo and also visit a huge airplane museum.About this Event
Omaha Zoo Campout
This event is for members of Scouts BSA Troops 42 & 422 only. Not open to the general public.
This is our biggest and maybe the best campout this year and has two main attractions. We will visit the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum Saturday morning and then move over to the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium in Omaha. We will be camping over night, Saturday, in and around the Sea Cave which is home to the Sea Lions. This comes with some perks - zoo admission in the afternoon and a guided night tour from their staff.
To start off our adventure, we'll load the bus Friday at 5:30 PM, leave by 6:00 PM, and drive to western Iowa. We will tent camp that night at Lake Manawa State Park. We will get up bright and early, break camp, eat breakfast, and start our sightseeing.
We'll have to haul our gear from the zoo parking lot to our Sea Cave sleepover. So, you'll want to pack your personal and sleeping gear in something that is easy to carry in a single trip and for a distance up to 1/2 mile. Totes would not be recommended for this campout. Uncle Stan's Military Surplus in Marion oftentimes has military duffels or packs with straps for fairly cheap.
Because of the distance, we'll be returning to St E's a bit later than is typical. It is likely that we will stop for a fast food lunch on our way home, Sunday. Scouts and adults will need to bring some money to buy their Sunday lunch. And as always, Scouts will call home with a firm ETA once we know when it will be.
The cost for this event is $45 for each participant - Scouts and adults. This includes admission to the SACAM museum, admission to the zoo, the overnight at the zoo, all camping, and all meals except a fast food lunch on the way home.
