Maximum Strength: Songs by Tony de Velasco

Somehow, I wrote and recorded eleven songs into an album, “Maximum Strength.” I can’t wait to perform them live in March!

Backstory:
In late 2020, I started writing songs to capture words, events, images, struggles, and sounds that kept showing up in my daily thoughts. I was going crazy, in a way, and didn’t know what else to do. Then, in private, I played a few of these for Nour, the children, and two amazing friends and musicians. When I did, Nate and Emily invited me to record songs at their home studio. Then they offered to play and sing on the recordings, too. Drums, lap steel, strings, harmonies, bass, trumpet, harmonica, piano. Suddenly there was a sound that felt like me and also bigger than me. We spent months making something. And then an album came to life, a thing I never wanted or expected to happen. It grew more involved by the week, until I got to here. So, please, listen to the songs if you have the time. They are up on all the streaming platforms, with lyrics so you can follow along. And, if you like what you hear, come out to the show!
Details:
We’re going on at 8pm sharp on March 4th at Lamplighter Lounge, 1702 Madison Avenue.
There’s no cover, but seating is limited. I would love to see you there! DM me with any questions.
Check back here for updates!
Players:
Nate Smith
He mixed and produced the album. He also played on all but one of the songs. He will be leading the band and performing on March 4th. Nate knows the songs as well as anyone, and if it weren’t for him, none of this would be real. Here’s his bio: https://artkognito.com/nate/
Emily Rooker
She plays piano and sings on seven of the eleven tracks and is also a co-producer. And at every step she’s believed in the songs. She’ll be playing and singing on the 4th, too. If you’ve never seen Emily perform, come to the show just for that. Here’s her bio: http://www.emilyrooker.com
Diego de Velasco
He heard the songs from their start. He doesn’t play on the album, but he’s in the band and will be playing bass on the 4th. He’s primarily a trombone player, but plays piano and guitar, too. I never even considered anyone else.
Nour Hantouli
They sing with me on two of the songs and have been as inside of this project as anyone could be. While they are a visual artist primarily (they designed all the album art) on the 4th they will be performing live. Here’s more about Nour: https://www.instagram.com/neithernour/
