MaveriX album ‘Cowpunk!’ on Rocketman RecordsMaveriX are an Italian band who mix Californian punk rock and country and western riffs, and this is their debut album. The trio of Drago, Teo and Nix formed in South Milan in 2022 to write songs combining their twin musical passions – country music and punk. Those may seem like strange bedfellows, but Boothill Foot Tappers in the UK and bands like Social Distortion and The Vandals in the US made cowpunk a passing phase in the ’80s. This hugely enjoyable album consists of nine high-energy tracks which make it abundantly clear that Cowpunk’s not dead!
Instrumental opener 8.6 – all Duane Eddy-style twangy guitar and rolling drums – paves the way for the excellent single Josh Brolin. The homage to the star of The Goonies and No Country For Old Men paints him as a modern American cowboy, who always finds his way into trouble. The Saddest Of The Bar has more reverb-laden guitar, and the heavily accented vocal delivery adds to its charm. MaveriX are a tight band, and sound a bit different because not many others are ploughing this furrow nowadays. Spaghetti Hymn is their take on the Pennywise classic Bro Hymn, and sounds like it might if Ennio Morricone had scored it for one of those ’60s westerns where Clint Eastwood starred as the man with no name. Cigars & Guns is based around a swaggering riff, while House In The Mountains is a slice of Buddy Holly-influenced rock ‘n’ roll, with a hugely infectious chorus. Sweet Alberta, released as the band’s debut single, almost fools you into thinking they’re pining for a woman, but it turns out it’s the wide-open spaces of the prairies that they’re missing. 2022 (When September Ends) sounds like Blink-182, while upbeat closer To The Alps could be Green Day covering a Creedence Clearwater Revival song. There’s plenty to enjoy here if you’re a fan of artists as disparate as Creedence, Johnny Cash, Green Day and Social Distortion. Cowpunks’ not dead! I bet they’re enormous fun live!
