This free concert, open to the public, features the Florida Folklife Program's 2025 Artist-in-Residence, Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band. The Florida Folklife Program features Florida's outstanding traditional artists in residence in Tallahassee each fall. Residencies consist of free public performances, school presentations and master classes designed to bring folk and traditional arts into the classroom and to broader audiences. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the series began in 2012. For more about the program, visit https://dos.fl.gov/cultural/programs/florida-folklife-program/artist-in-residence-series/
Florida State University's Longmire Building is located at 222 S. Copeland Street, Tallahassee, FL 32304.
Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band will present "A Celebration of America's Music: From Plymouth Rock to Rock & Roll." Take a journey through time and celebrate the multicultural nature of the music of the United States. The band performs the songs and tells the story that connects traditional folk music, spirituals, fiddle tunes, Appalachian music, ragtime, blues, rhythm and blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, and rock & roll. Immigrants, both voluntary and involuntary, have been carrying their musical traditions to the New World since before the United States became an independent nation. New songs and styles emerged from encounters among diverse people and the unique American experience itself. As America changed, grew, and pushed its boundaries, so did the music.
Beautiful projected images enhance this fun and unique experience for all ages. Featuring Matthew Sabatella on vocals, guitar, banjo, and mountain dulcimer; Sean Edelson on mandolin, Chris DeAngelis on bass; and Jack Stamates on fiddle.
