Join us as we exhibit our new album ‚Wishes‘ and other new content at one of Berlin‘s hottest jazz venues as part of Jazzwoche #8!!!Founded in early 2024, the Matthew Liebeck Quartett is an international jazz ensemble based in Berlin, led by trumpeter and composer Matthew Liebeck (London, UK).
Inspired by the exploratory spirit of the 1960s Miles Davis Quintet (Second Great Quintet) and the harmonic sophistication of Herbie Hancock’s Blue Note recordings, the quartet combines strong melodic writing with dynamic rhythmic frameworks. A defining feature of the group’s sound is its integration of drum and bass aesthetics into a jazz context, informed by the classic work of golden-era pioneers such as Photek, Dillinja, and Source Direct. Rather than direct quotation, these influences shape the band’s approach to groove, momentum, and form. The quartet’s international lineup—bringing together musicians from the UK, Germany, and Japan— contributes to a highly interactive and open musical language, emphasizing collective improvisation and deep ensemble interplay.
