Matt Stuart
I am not sure which came first, being nosey or an interest in “street photography”, but a fascination with people and the way they live their lives is why I enjoy the business so much. I can’t hide behind lights and technology, I am reliant on a small Leica camera, patience and lots of optimism. But what I get in return is the chance to make an honest picture that people know immediately is a genuine moment and which hopefully burrows deep into their memories.
All that life can afford was made on the streets of London between 2004 & 2016.

For so many reasons, my camera has pointed me towards the things which matter most in my life; my friends, family and city routinely fill my frame. In Car Pictures, I look to portray our car-dependent society as one which foster’s both intimacy and isolation within my world of friends and artists.
Growing up in Los Angeles, my father drove an old Mercedes which he converted to run on recycled vegetable oil collected from various restaurants throughout the city. At 19, I bought the car off him, continuing his cost-effective and climate-friendly efforts of living with a car in Los Angeles.
For my friends, our cars exist as a vehicle which take us from place to place and as a space for us to come into touch with each other. Inside of them, we have shared stories, laughter, music and adventures. Through the car, I have learned new things about the people and city I love.
It is complicated to have made these photographs in the time of our climate crisis. Yes, these cars (and my friends) look beautiful, however it is not my intention to sell an idealistic image of L.A. or of the automobile. If anything, these photographs are for me and my friends, to remember what it looked like to come of age in a time threatened by such enormous existential pressures, and to cement our memories of being in Los Angeles with each other.
