The City of Reno’s Human Rights Commission, in partnership with Cordillera International Film Festival and Our Center, is inviting the public to a special screening of the documentary film, "Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine." This event will be Friday, June 30, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the National Automobile Museum, located at 1 Museum Drive, Reno, NV 89501.
The event is open to the public, and admission is free of charge. However, due to limited seating, interested individuals are encouraged to RSVP in advance. Those interested can RSVP here.
"Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine" is an award-winning documentary that tells the story of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man who became the victim of a hate crime in 1998. The documentary revisits a crime that sparked national reckoning with the reality of homophobia, and that eventually led to the creation of The Matthew Shepard Foundation and the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act - the first of its kind.
The evening will begin with a reception honoring Matthew Shepard's parents, Dennis and Judy Shepard, followed by a free screening of the film.
Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion on LGBTQ issues, rights, and societal change over time. The Shepards and the film’s producer, Zeina Barkawai will be part of the discussion. This collaborative effort by the City of Reno’s Human Rights Commission with Cordillera Film Festival and Our Center, aims to raise awareness and foster dialogue around LGBTQ issues in northern Nevada.
The free event was in part sponsored by Reno Vice Mayor Devon Reese, and Councilmembers Naomi Duerr and Miguel Martinez.
