Author, journalist and researcher Matt Anniss has spent much of the last decade documenting forgotten and overlooked aspects of dance music history, most notably in his book Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music (Velocity Press), now with an updated and expanded edition. He joins us to talk about why most dance music history is inaccurate (and why) – and how it should be documented and narrativized going forward. Drawing on his own research and experience – not just of dance music culture in the UK, but elsewhere too – Matt will bust myths, reveal the real stories, and explain how ‘hidden histories’ tell us more about the history of club culture than the authorised, familiar stories ✌️
