About this Event
Math Series → Session 4: Geometry
Join us for brunch, fun, and learning at 518 Valencia Street (at 16th)! Walk away with a Spark Deck and math materials you can use right away in your program.
Yes, math can be a >blast< and in this hands-on series of workshops, we're going to prove it! Participants will learn how to use the latest theories in math instruction to create and facilitate quick, fun, daily math activities. In addition, participants will learn how to support staff and parents/caregivers in thinking more math-fully and will create an action plan for making math happen all the time.
In each session, we'll explore and practice games and activities that help young people develop specific math skills, and will support staff in improving and evolving math activities so they never get stale. In addition, in each session we will cover one or more SEL and/or facilitation skills to help make doing math activities even more meaningful, (e.g. integrating teamwork, facilitating the safe use of manipulatives, developing a growth mindset, etc.).
While this series is specifically designed with K-8 program participants in mind, the concepts covered can be applied when working with high school students as well.
Goal: In this session, we will explore what Geometry means and how to scaffold and adapt activities to make them accessible for all youth
Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Learn and share ideas for games and activities that help youth strengthen their Geometry skills
- Discuss the concepts of differentiation, growth mindset, and routine and repetition, when designing and leading math activities
- Create a plan for bringing back what they learned to their program and trying out the activities
Note that this session will take place at Mission Graduates, 518 Valencia Street (at 16th).
