Perfumer Julianne Lee leads a three week course exploring crucial aldehydic, fresh, and floral materials in the perfumers' organ. In person.
About this Event

Perfumer Julianne Lee leads a course exploring important green and spicy materials in the perfumers' organ. An indispensable first step in practicing perfumery, these sessions will enhance your olfactory fluency as you grow a technical familiarity with the materials.

The Materials Course series is a systematic, in-depth study of the materials organ - category by category. It has been offered online as the "Eleven Week Materials Course," and is now available in-person at the Institute for Art and Olfaction.

Here, over three Tuesday sessions, we will be exploring the Aldehydic Synthetic, Fresh Synthetic, Floral Synthetic, and Honey Synthetic categories of the perfume materials organ, with students taking home small vials of the materials for future research and olfactory training.

Julianne will lead the class in smelling and discussing five crucial materials in each 2-hour, in-person session. Together, we will engage in an organoleptic evaluation of each material, noting its function, aesthetics and technicalities in its fragrance family.

Participants will leave with a fluency in the most important molecules of modern perfumery.

For beginners, this class presents an indispensable first step in practicing perfumery: growing your familiarity with the materials. For more experienced perfumers, the class presents an opportunity to enrich your process and technical abilities.

This ticket applies to in-person attendance across three (3) Tuesday afternoons: September 3, 10, and 17, 2024 from 5:30-7:00 PM PST. These classes cover part 1B of the Materials Module series, which are also offered online. There are three (3) modules total in the series, which we have subdivided for courses taken in-person at The Institute for Art and Olfaction in Los Angeles.

These modules are not consecutive: any student can start at any module (though modules 1 and 2 cover more commonly used materials). Beginners are welcome!

Attendance and Cancellation Policy: Please note that you must reserve your space in advance. If you just show up without reserving a spot, there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate you.

When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials.

- Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 2 weeks or more (14 days) before the scheduled session will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you, but will 100% refund your spot, or give you credit for another class.

– Refunds or class credits requested less than 14 days before the scheduled sessipn: We will refund you 50% of your class fee. Why? Because we’ve already ordered the materials. Refunds or class credits requested less than 48 hours before the class, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted. The exception to this, of course, is if you have been exposed to Covid-19, or are feeling symptoms yourself.

- Cancellations or refund requests must be made by email or via the Eventbrite 'request refund' option.

Note also that event tickets are non-transferable. Thank you for understanding!
