Create biomaterials from accessible, non-toxic ingredients. Learn the science and alchemy behind the art of bioplastics.
About this Event

Looking for biodegradable, non-toxic alternatives to resin, silicone, or foam? This is your opportunity to learn how to alchemize raw ingredients into environmentally sustainable materials.

In this workshop, students will have a chance to create their own biomaterial, learn the history and science behind various types of biomaterials, and understand their vast possibilities. These materials can be applied in various fields including but not limited to product design, fashion, architecture, and art. Through these explorations, we are moving the needle towards an increasingly healthy and compassionate material ecology.

Students will walk away with their own samples as well as a strong understanding of the tools and methodologies needed to embark on their own bioplastic journeys. Come experiment, learn, and play!No prior experience is necessary to take this workshop.

About the Instructor

Grace Jung is an artist and educator working at the intersection of material science, sculpture, biology, and ecology. She engages in work that alchemizes new realities from what is discarded, broken, and decomposed. Independent research in biomaterials, mycelium, and calcium carbonate has inspired her to develop living sculptures that nurture these regenerative processes. Her inquiry into collaborative healing and evolution has led to deeper explorations of movement, play, wonder, and empathy.

Grace's journey has spanned realms of fashion design, regenerative architecture, film and bio-art/sculpture. She has studied Art Practice and Economics at UC Berkeley as well as Fashion and Textiles at Central Saint Martins. Her experience working with regenerative materials and creative form has led her to work at Maison Margiela, Terreform ONE, and currently Randy Polumbo. Grace also continually works as a freelance artist and art director working with clients and collaborators looking to push their ideas further conceptually and materially. She has previously taught at ONE Lab, Rutgers University, and now Biotech Without Borders, where she shares her findings to collectively work towards a more balanced relationship with Nature.
