About this Event

Matei Predescu is a Romanian-American pianist, keyboardist, composer, and improviser whose omnivorous musical pursuits range from their modern jazz and creative music project “Fictions/Ficțiuni” to experimental noise and electronic ambient projects.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Matei’s original music explores themes of cultural memory, generational trauma, and Romanian American identity through the intersection of Black American music, Eastern European folk music traditions, and experimental music. In the Bay Area, Matei has performed at festivals such as San Jose Jazz Festival, Stanford Jazz Festival, Next Generation Jazz Festival, and at venues like Mr Tipples Jazz Club, Café Stritch, Club Deluxe, and SFJazz. Matei is now an in demand sideman and bandleader in New York City.

Paul Pandit is a versatile and exciting bass player and composer quickly emerging in the Brooklyn music scene. Adept at both upright and electric bass his sound draws from a well of diverse influences, often defying categorization. This is true of his original compositions as well, where folk influenced melodies are woven together with lush harmonies and innovative forms. He is in demand across a wide range of genres and can be found performing at many different venues in New York City including Bar Bayeux, Close Up, Nublu, Arlene’s Grocery, Rockwood Music Hall, Mercury Lounge, Cafe Erzulie, and Fiction.

In 2022, he released his debut album, Portrait Imperfect, which was named one of the Best New Albums of the Year by Downbeat Magazine. A fervent advocate of cross-disciplinary collaboration and exploration, he debuted Walking in the City, a project with poets from across Brooklyn, at National Sawdust in June 2023.

He currently curates a vinyl listening series,“Dialogues,” with local musicians at Kissa Kissa in Crown Heights.
